At a glance

How much does ChondroFiller cost in the UK?

ChondroFiller cost in the UK starts at £3,000 for one box at London Cartilage Clinic, with £5,500 for two boxes and £8,000 for three. Each ChondroFiller price is inclusive of consultation, ultrasound, the product itself and the six-week follow-up; the same pricing applies across all joints. London Cartilage Clinic was the first UK clinic to offer ChondroFiller as an injection, so a comparable private ChondroFiller injection cost is not widely published elsewhere in the UK. Delivered by Professor Paul Lee at an ICRS Teaching Centre of Excellence.

Pricing is by treatment volume. Most defects are treated with one box; larger or multi-compartment defects may need two or three.

ChondroFiller cost in the UK explained

ChondroFiller is an acellular collagen scaffold imported from Germany under prescription. The product itself is the largest single component of the price. It is delivered under ultrasound guidance into the joint and coats the cartilage at the load-bearing bone surfaces, which means image acquisition, the injection itself, and clinical follow-up are all part of a typical thirty to forty-five minute appointment. There is no upper age limit and no defect-size limit on the injection. Most patients are treated with a single box; larger surface areas or multi-compartment joints may need two or three.

At London Cartilage Clinic the injection is delivered by Professor Paul Lee, who introduced ChondroFiller to UK practice and was the first clinician to offer it in the UK as an injection. We do not subcontract the injection to a less experienced clinician. The price you see here is the price you pay; we do not add an ultrasound fee, an imaging fee, or a separate clinic fee on top.

Comparing ChondroFiller® Clinics

Questions to ask before comparing ChondroFiller® prices

ChondroFiller is a regenerative scaffold delivered into a precisely mapped cartilage defect, not a generic injection. A cheaper headline price often reflects what is not included, who delivers it, or whether the clinic does ChondroFiller as a core practice at all. Use these questions when comparing UK clinics on ChondroFiller® cost.

  • Is ChondroFiller a core part of the clinic’s practice?

ChondroFiller is defect-specific and operator-sensitive. Ask how many ChondroFiller injections the clinic and the named clinician have done. London Cartilage Clinic introduced ChondroFiller to the UK as an injection and maintains an outcome database.
  • Is the injection delivered under real-time ultrasound guidance?

ChondroFiller fills a specific cartilage defect. Without ultrasound guidance, accurate placement is guesswork. Some clinics inject by anatomical landmark alone, which is faster and cheaper but defeats the purpose of a defect-targeted scaffold.
  • Who performs the injection, and is it the same clinician as the consultation?

A consultant-led pathway where the consulting clinician also injects gives you a single point of accountability. A consultation/inject hand-off is cheaper to staff but is not the same service.
  • Has the clinic reviewed the imaging before quoting?

Box requirement (one, two, or three) depends on defect size and location. A clinic quoting before seeing the imaging is quoting without enough information. Ask whether MRI review is included in the consultation.
  • What outcome data does the clinic publish for ChondroFiller specifically?

ChondroFiller is a regenerative product with measurable outcomes (IKDC, Harris Hip Score, MOCART MRI). A clinic that publishes its own outcome data is selecting for results. A clinic that quotes manufacturer figures only may not have a meaningful cohort.
  • What clinical follow-up is included as standard?

A six-week clinical review is the minimum we would recommend for a regenerative scaffold. Cheaper packages sometimes skip follow-up entirely or quote it separately, which leaves the patient without a checkpoint while new tissue is establishing.
  • How does the clinic decide who is NOT suitable for ChondroFiller?

ChondroFiller is best suited to selected focal cartilage defects, not widespread bone-on-bone arthritis. A clinic willing to decline unsuitable cases is selecting for outcomes. A clinic that says yes to everyone is selecting for revenue.
  • Are biologic add-ons (stem cells, PRP) part of a planned protocol or upsold on the day?

Combination treatment may be clinically appropriate, but should be decided at consultation after imaging review, not upsold on the day of the injection. Ask for the complete plan and total cost in writing before agreeing.

Watch Out For

Red flags when choosing a ChondroFiller® provider

  • No pre-treatment MRI review

ChondroFiller targets a specific cartilage defect. A clinic prepared to inject without reviewing imaging is not selecting the right patients or the right number of boxes.
  • Headline price that excludes the product itself

Some quotes price the procedure only and add the ChondroFiller product separately. Our box-tier pricing is all-in.
  • No published or auditable outcome data

For a regenerative product, the clinic should be able to show what their patients’ IKDC, Harris Hip Score or MOCART scores look like at six and twelve months.
  • Surgery sold as the only option for a focal defect

ChondroFiller can be delivered as an injection for most focal defects. If a clinic only offers a surgical pathway without discussing the injection option, you are not getting the full picture.
  • Biologic add-ons (stem cells, PRP) presented as a single fixed package

Combination treatment should be decided after imaging review, not bundled by default. Ask for an itemised plan and the rationale for each component.
  • No named clinician on the booking confirmation

If you cannot see who will deliver the injection before paying a deposit, the clinic is reserving the right to substitute a less experienced operator on the day.

Why ChondroFiller at London Cartilage Clinic

  • First UK clinic to offer ChondroFiller as an injection

Professor Paul Lee introduced ChondroFiller to UK practice and was the first clinician in the UK to deliver it as an injection. If you have come across the product elsewhere, the consultation and injection still happen here at London Cartilage Clinic.
  • ICRS Teaching Centre of Excellence

London Cartilage Clinic is recognised by the International Cartilage Regeneration and Joint Preservation Society as a Teaching Centre of Excellence. Cartilage regeneration is one of our principal interests and the published outcome database we maintain is among the largest in Europe.
  • A regenerate-first philosophy

ChondroFiller fits a treatment philosophy that prefers preserving and regenerating your own joint over replacement. That philosophy is the reason patients travel here for a second opinion before agreeing to a knee or hip replacement elsewhere.
  • Ultrasound guidance, every time

Every ChondroFiller injection at London Cartilage Clinic is delivered under ultrasound guidance. The product is designed to fill a specific defect; placing it without imaging defeats the point.

Your ChondroFiller journey

  1. 1

    Discovery call (free, 15 minutes)

A clinical coordinator confirms whether ChondroFiller looks like the right treatment to investigate, books the consultation if so, and answers cost questions.
  2. 2

Consultation with Professor Lee (£350, 60 minutes)

Imaging review, clinical examination, and a treatment plan in writing. We confirm whether you are a candidate, how many boxes are likely needed, and the price you will pay.
  3. 3

    Pre-treatment imaging

Where MRI is not already available, we arrange one to map the cartilage defect before treatment. This is quoted separately at £450.
  4. 4

    The injection

A single 30 to 45 minute outpatient appointment under ultrasound guidance. No general anaesthetic. Most patients walk out the same hour.
  5. 5

    First two weeks

Activity modification rather than full immobilisation. Most patients are back to desk work the next day; high-impact activity is paused for two to four weeks.
  6. 6

    Six-week follow-up

Clinical review with the treating clinician. Onward physiotherapy guidance where helpful.

Funding, insurance and payment

Self-pay

£3,000, £5,500 or £8,000 depending on the number of boxes used. Settled by bank transfer or card before the procedure.

We can discuss finance options on request. We do not actively promote a specific finance partner.

Private medical insurance

London Cartilage Clinic is a private-pay practice and does not work with UK insurance panels. ChondroFiller is not routinely available on the NHS or via the major UK PMI providers in any case.

We can provide an itemised invoice for you to submit to your insurer if you would like to claim the treatment back, but the agreement is between you and your insurer.

International patients

A meaningful share of our ChondroFiller patients travel from outside the UK. We can coordinate consultation, imaging and treatment into a focused visit; travel and accommodation are arranged separately.

Outcomes after ChondroFiller

ChondroFiller is a regenerative treatment, not an immediate symptom-relief injection. Most patients begin to notice improvement at six to twelve weeks, with continued benefit building over six to twelve months as new tissue establishes within the scaffold. The aim is to delay or avoid joint replacement, not to replace it.

We measure outcome using clinical scores at consultation, three months and twelve months, and feed that data into the published ICRS-aligned outcome database. Your individual result will sit somewhere on that distribution; we will tell you, in writing at consultation, what to expect for your specific defect.

Patient stories

I had been told a knee replacement was the only option. Professor Lee suggested ChondroFiller and the difference twelve months later is remarkable. I am back to long walks without pain.

Frequently asked questions

How much does ChondroFiller cost in the UK?

ChondroFiller at London Cartilage Clinic costs £3,000 for one box, £5,500 for two boxes, or £8,000 for three boxes, all inclusive of consultation, ultrasound, the product itself and follow-up. The same pricing applies whether the defect is in the knee, hip, shoulder, ankle, elbow, foot, hand or wrist.

How many boxes will I need?

Most patients are treated with a single box for a focused cartilage defect. Two or three boxes are used where the defect is larger, where two compartments are being treated, or in revision cases. The number you need is confirmed at consultation after imaging review.

Can I claim ChondroFiller on private medical insurance?

London Cartilage Clinic is a private-pay practice and does not contract with UK PMI panels. ChondroFiller is not routinely covered by UK insurers in any case. We can provide an itemised invoice if you wish to submit a claim independently.

Does the price include ultrasound and the product itself?

Yes. Ultrasound, the ChondroFiller product, and the injection are all included. Some clinics quote the procedure fee separately from the product cost; we do not.

Are IV antibiotics included in the ChondroFiller price?

Yes. IV antibiotic cover is included in every ChondroFiller box-tier price as part of our conservative infection-prevention protocol. The infection risk for a ChondroFiller injection is low, but layered protection (IV antibiotic prophylaxis, sterile technique, ultrasound guidance, six-week clinical review) is the standard we apply to both our ChondroFiller® and Arthrosamid® injections. It is not a separate add-on.

Can I have ChondroFiller in any joint?

Yes. We treat the knee most often, but ChondroFiller is also delivered into the hip, shoulder, ankle, elbow, foot, hand and wrist where there is a cartilage defect that would benefit. Suitability is confirmed at consultation.

How long is recovery, and can I work the next day?

Most patients are back to desk work the same day or the next day. High-impact activity is paused for two to four weeks. There is no surgical immobilisation and no time off work for most patients.

How does ChondroFiller compare to Arthrosamid or to a knee replacement?

Arthrosamid is a long-acting hydrogel that cushions the joint without regenerating cartilage. ChondroFiller is a regenerative scaffold that supports new tissue growth. Knee replacement removes the joint surface and replaces it with metal and plastic. ChondroFiller fits patients who are trying to preserve the joint they have.

Why is ChondroFiller priced where it is?

The product itself is imported from Germany under prescription and represents most of the cost. The remainder reflects ultrasound, Professor Lee’s time on the day and at follow-up, and the published outcome database that all our cartilage cases feed into.

Can I pay in instalments?

We can discuss finance options on request rather than promoting a specific provider. The treatment is also straightforward to settle by bank transfer or card before the procedure.

Is the clinician I see at consultation the same one who injects?

Yes. Professor Paul Lee delivers ChondroFiller treatment at London Cartilage Clinic. There is no transfer to a less experienced clinician between consultation and procedure.

Where will the procedure happen?

The consultation and the injection both take place at our 66 Harley Street clinic in central London. ChondroFiller is an outpatient procedure; no hospital admission is required.
