Watch: How ChondroFiller® Works

ChondroFiller® cartilage regeneration in motion

A short manufacturer video showing how the ChondroFiller® collagen scaffold is placed into a cartilage defect and how the body’s own cells migrate in to rebuild tissue over the following months. The mechanism is the same whether ChondroFiller® is delivered as a clinic injection (the pathway on this page) or as part of the surgical Liquid Cartilage™ keyhole procedure.

Joint Mobility

Don't Let Cartilage Damage End Your Movement

Cartilage injuries can steal the joy from daily life. Left untreated, they lead to arthritis and eventual joint replacement. At London Cartilage Clinic, we specialise in joint preservation.

"Repair, not replace — that’s the future of joint care."

What is ChondroFiller®?

A biological collagen scaffold delivered in liquid form. It gels in minutes, providing a 3D framework for your own cells to grow healthy, hyaline-like cartilage.

“ChondroFiller® injection is like resurfacing a road where the entire surface is worn but the structure underneath is intact. A fresh protective layer is laid across the whole stretch in a single pass. There is no upper age limit and no defect-size limit, because the procedure does the protective work itself.”
Professor Paul Lee
  • Defect Filling

    Instantly stabilises damaged areas.

  • Cell Recruitment

Attracts native cells into the scaffold.

  • True Regeneration

    Supports gold-standard hyaline cartilage.

ChondroFiller Scaffold

The Regeneration Mechanism

How ChondroFiller® regenerates cartilage

The procedure is short, but the regeneration plays out over months. Here is what happens at each stage.

  1. 01

    Map the defect

MRI imaging reviewed at consultation to confirm the cartilage defect, its size, location and the surrounding cartilage. The number of ChondroFiller® boxes is decided here.

  2. 02

    Deliver the scaffold

A 30 to 45 minute outpatient appointment, no general anaesthetic, no surgical incision. The acellular collagen gel is delivered precisely into the defect under real-time ultrasound guidance.

  3. 03

    Scaffold sets in minutes

The collagen gel sets in situ within minutes, filling the defect and forming a three-dimensional matrix that protects the area and invites the body’s own cells in.

  4. 04

    Cells migrate, cartilage rebuilds

Over six to twelve months, the body’s own resident cells migrate into the scaffold and lay down hyaline-like cartilage. Improvement typically begins at six to twelve weeks, with continued benefit building over the year.

One treatment. One short appointment. A cartilage repair process that runs in the background for months.

Candidate Profile

Who is ChondroFiller® for?

ChondroFiller® is appropriate across the spectrum of cartilage wear, from a contained focal defect to diffuse surface wear across the whole joint. There is no upper age limit and no defect-size limit on the injection, and it is particularly valuable as a pre-replacement option for active patients in their 60s, 70s and beyond. Below is the short list; see the suitability page for the full assessment framework.

Good candidates may include

  • Cartilage wear in the joint, whether a contained focal defect or diffuse surface wear (no defect-size limit)
  • Patients of any age, including active patients in their 60s, 70s and beyond
  • A pre-replacement pathway for patients told they need a joint replacement who want to try preservation first
  • Post-injury cartilage damage (chondral lesion, OCD, post-meniscal injury)
  • Stable joint mechanics (no untreated ligament instability or major malalignment)
  • Realistic expectations about a 6 to 12 month timeline for new tissue to form within the scaffold
  • Knee, hip, shoulder, ankle, elbow, foot, hand or wrist (joint-agnostic)

Where caution is needed

  • A single contained focal defect in an otherwise healthy joint may be a clearer fit for Liquid Cartilage™ surgical regeneration
  • Untreated joint instability or major malalignment
  • Active infection (joint or systemic)
  • Unrealistic expectation of immediate or guaranteed pain relief
  • Immunosuppression or poorly controlled diabetes

Choosing Where To Have ChondroFiller®

Why choose London Cartilage Clinic for ChondroFiller®?

Seven things that distinguish ChondroFiller® at London Cartilage Clinic from a generic injection appointment.

  • First UK clinic to offer ChondroFiller as an injection

Professor Paul Lee introduced ChondroFiller to UK practice and was the first clinician in the UK to deliver it as an injection. If you have come across the product elsewhere, the consultation and injection still happen here.

    Meet Professor Lee
  • ICRS Teaching Centre of Excellence

Recognised by the International Cartilage Regeneration and Joint Preservation Society as a Teaching Centre. Cartilage regeneration is a principal interest; our published outcome database is among the largest in Europe.

    See the evidence
  • Ultrasound-guided, every time

Every ChondroFiller injection is delivered under real-time ultrasound guidance, not by anatomical landmark alone. The product fills a specific defect; placement without imaging defeats the point.

    Check your suitability
  • Consultant-led, never subcontracted

Every patient is assessed by Professor Lee in person. The clinician you see at consultation is the clinician who delivers the injection. No hand-off to a less experienced operator.

    Who is suitable?
  • Conservative infection-prevention protocol

Although the infection risk for a ChondroFiller® injection is low, we include IV antibiotic cover and sterile-field standards above the typical outpatient norm. Safety is layered, not optional. The same protocol is applied to our Arthrosamid® injections.

    What is included
  • Regenerate-first philosophy

ChondroFiller fits a treatment philosophy that prefers preserving and regenerating your own joint over replacement. The reason patients travel here for a second opinion before agreeing to knee or hip replacement elsewhere.

    Our cartilage regeneration approach
  • Clear self-funded pricing

Fixed box-tier pricing from £3,000, inclusive of consultation, ultrasound, the ChondroFiller product, the injection and the six-week follow-up. No surprise add-ons.

    See ChondroFiller cost
  • Follow-up and rehabilitation

Six-week clinical review included as standard, with onward physiotherapy guidance and a direct line to the team during recovery. Aftercare is part of the treatment, not an add-on.

Larger or more complex cartilage defect?

There is also Liquid Cartilage™

This page covers ChondroFiller® as an ultrasound-guided injection on its own, suitable for most focal cartilage defects. For larger or more complex defects, Professor Lee offers Liquid Cartilage™: our proprietary keyhole-surgery pathway that combines ChondroFiller® with the body’s own medicinal signalling cells (MSCs from bone marrow, fat, or PRF) in a single arthroscopic procedure, inspired by ACI/MACI principles.

How much does ChondroFiller cost in the UK?

ChondroFiller at London Cartilage Clinic costs from £3,000 for one box, £5,500 for two boxes, or £8,000 for three boxes. Each price is inclusive of consultation, ultrasound, the ChondroFiller product, the injection itself and a six-week clinical follow-up. The same pricing applies whether the defect is in the knee, hip, shoulder, ankle, elbow, foot, hand or wrist. See the ChondroFiller cost guide for full detail.

Does ChondroFiller really regenerate cartilage?

ChondroFiller is an acellular collagen scaffold that fills a cartilage defect and provides a framework for the body’s own cells to migrate in and regenerate hyaline-like cartilage. Published outcome data shows +30 IKDC in knees, +33 Harris Hip Score in hips, and MOCART MRI scores of 70 to 87 indicating high-quality cartilage regeneration, with over 19,000 global cases supporting safety. Outcomes depend on defect size, location, surrounding cartilage quality and patient suitability.

Is ChondroFiller available on the NHS or private medical insurance?

No. ChondroFiller is not routinely funded by the NHS and is not currently covered by the major UK private medical insurers, including Bupa and AXA. Patients access ChondroFiller privately on a self-funded basis at London Cartilage Clinic. We can provide an itemised invoice if you wish to submit a claim independently.

Who is suitable for ChondroFiller as an injection?

ChondroFiller is suited to patients with cartilage wear across the spectrum, from a contained focal defect to diffuse surface wear across the joint, in the knee, hip, shoulder, ankle, elbow, foot, hand or wrist. There is no upper age limit and no defect-size limit on the injection. It is particularly valuable as a pre-replacement option for active patients in their 60s, 70s and beyond who want to preserve their own joint. Suitability is confirmed by Professor Lee at consultation after imaging review. Take the ChondroFiller suitability self-assessment for a quick indicator.

How long does ChondroFiller take to work?

ChondroFiller is a regenerative scaffold, not an immediate pain-relief injection. Most patients begin to notice improvement at six to twelve weeks, with continued benefit building over six to twelve months as new tissue establishes within the scaffold. The aim is to support natural cartilage regeneration and preserve the joint, not to mask symptoms.

What is the ChondroFiller injection procedure like, and what is the recovery?

ChondroFiller is delivered as a 30 to 45 minute outpatient injection under ultrasound guidance, with no general anaesthetic and no surgical incision. The gel sets within minutes inside the cartilage defect. Most patients walk out the same hour and return to desk work the same day or the next day, with high-impact activity paused for two to four weeks. Onward physiotherapy is optional, quoted separately.
