Arthrosamid cost in the UK explained

Arthrosamid is a polyacrylamide hydrogel imported from Denmark under prescription. The product itself is the largest single component of the price. The injection is delivered under ultrasound guidance using a structured fifteen-step protocol that we developed at LCC and published; that protocol has since been adopted internationally and is the principal differentiator between Arthrosamid done well and Arthrosamid done badly.

At LCC the procedure is delivered by Professor Paul Lee. The price covers the consultation on the day, ultrasound, the product, the protocol, and a six-week follow-up. There is no separate clinic fee or imaging surcharge.

What is included in the price

Included in the price

  • Pre-treatment consultation with Professor Lee
  • Ultrasound imaging on the day
  • The Arthrosamid product itself (1, 2 or 3 box as applicable)
  • The injection delivered under the LCC fifteen-step protocol
  • On-the-day medications including local anaesthetic
  • Six-week clinical follow-up
  • Direct line to the team for questions during recovery

Not included, quoted separately

  • MRI imaging at £450, where pre-treatment mapping is needed and not already available
  • Onward physiotherapy, which is quoted separately by your physiotherapist
  • Travel and accommodation for international patients

Why Arthrosamid at LCC

  • First UK clinic

LCC introduced Arthrosamid to the UK and has more cases on the published outcome database than any other UK provider. If you are comparing UK clinics on Arthrosamid volume and follow-up data, this is the highest-volume comparison point.
  • A protocol, not a product

The injection itself is straightforward. The fifteen-step protocol that surrounds it, including patient selection, ultrasound guidance, joint preparation, and post-procedure management, is what makes the difference. That protocol was developed here and is now published and adopted internationally.
  • Long-acting, not regenerative

Arthrosamid is honestly described as a cushion, not a cure. Where you have arthritis and want lasting symptom control without surgery, it is among the better-evidenced options. Where you are trying to regenerate cartilage tissue, ChondroFiller or STACi is the right conversation. We will tell you which is right for your case.
  • Patients we treat

We treat recreational runners and walkers, people who want lasting symptom control without surgery, and patients who have been told a knee replacement is the only option and want a second opinion before agreeing to it.

Your Arthrosamid journey

  1. 1

    Discovery call (free, 15 minutes)

A clinical coordinator confirms whether Arthrosamid looks like the right treatment to investigate, books the consultation if so, and answers cost questions.
  2. 2

Consultation with Professor Lee (£350, 60 minutes)

Imaging review, examination, and a treatment plan in writing. We confirm whether you are a candidate, how many boxes are likely needed, and the price you will pay.
  3. 3

    Pre-treatment imaging

Where MRI is not already available, we arrange one to confirm the joint is suitable. Quoted separately at £450.
  4. 4

    The injection

A 30 to 45 minute outpatient appointment using the LCC fifteen-step protocol under ultrasound guidance. No general anaesthetic.
  5. 5

    First two weeks

Activity modification rather than full immobilisation. Most patients are back to desk work the next day; high-impact activity is paused for two to four weeks.
  6. 6

    Six-week follow-up

Clinical review, pain and function scores, and onward physiotherapy guidance where helpful.

Funding, insurance and payment

Self-pay

£3,000, £5,500 or £8,000 depending on the number of boxes used. Settled by bank transfer or card before the procedure.

We can discuss finance options on request rather than promoting a specific finance partner.

Private medical insurance

London Cartilage Clinic is a private-pay practice and does not work with UK insurance panels. Arthrosamid is not routinely available on the NHS or via UK insurers in any case.

We can provide an itemised invoice for you to submit to your insurer if you wish to claim, but the agreement is between you and your insurer.

International patients

Many of our Arthrosamid patients travel from outside the UK. We can coordinate consultation, imaging and treatment into a focused visit; travel and accommodation are arranged separately.

Outcomes after Arthrosamid

Arthrosamid is a long-acting symptom-control treatment for joint osteoarthritis. Most patients begin to notice improvement at four to six weeks, with continued benefit established by twelve weeks. Published outcome data shows symptom relief lasting on average two to three years for the knee. Individual outcomes vary; we will tell you, in writing at consultation, what to expect for your specific joint and stage of arthritis.

Arthrosamid is not a cure. It is one of the most lasting non-surgical options where the joint is still salvageable. For patients trying to delay or avoid joint replacement surgery, it is among the better-evidenced choices.

Patient stories

I had been managing knee pain for years with the usual injections and they all wore off. Arthrosamid at LCC was different. Eighteen months later I am still walking pain-free.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Arthrosamid cost in the UK?

Arthrosamid at LCC costs £3,000 for one box, £5,500 for two, or £8,000 for three, all inclusive of consultation, ultrasound, the product itself, the fifteen-step protocol and follow-up. Same pricing across all joints.

How many boxes will I need?

Most patients are treated with a single box per joint. Two or three boxes are used where two or more joints are being treated in the same session, or where the joint is large and additional volume is clinically indicated.

Can I claim Arthrosamid on private medical insurance?

LCC does not contract with UK PMI panels. Arthrosamid is not routinely covered by UK insurers anyway. We can provide an itemised invoice for you to submit a claim independently.

Does the price include ultrasound and the product?

Yes. Ultrasound, the Arthrosamid product, and the injection are all included. The published fifteen-step protocol that surrounds the injection is also included.

Can I have Arthrosamid in joints other than the knee?

Yes. The knee is the most common application, but Arthrosamid is also delivered into the hip, shoulder, ankle, elbow, foot, hand and wrist. Suitability is confirmed at consultation.

How long does Arthrosamid last?

Published outcome data for the knee shows on average two to three years of symptom relief. Individual outcomes vary by stage of arthritis, body weight and activity level. We will tell you, in writing, what to expect for your specific case.

How does Arthrosamid compare to ChondroFiller, knee replacement or steroid injections?

Steroid injections give weeks of relief and are not regenerative. Arthrosamid is a long-acting cushion lasting years, but does not regenerate cartilage. ChondroFiller is a regenerative scaffold for cartilage defects. Knee replacement removes the joint surface entirely. We will discuss which is right for your case at consultation.

Why is Arthrosamid priced where it is?

The product itself is imported under prescription from Denmark and is the largest single component of the price. The remainder reflects ultrasound, the published fifteen-step protocol, and Professor Lee’s time on the day and at follow-up.

Can I pay in instalments?

We can discuss finance options on request. The treatment is also straightforward to settle by bank transfer or card before the procedure.

Is the clinician I see at consultation the same one who injects?

Yes. Professor Paul Lee delivers Arthrosamid treatment at LCC. There is no transfer to a less experienced clinician between consultation and procedure.

Where will the procedure happen?

The consultation and the injection both take place at our 66 Harley Street clinic in central London. Arthrosamid is an outpatient procedure; no hospital admission is required.
