Meniscus regeneration cost in the UK

Biologically-augmented meniscus regeneration at London Cartilage Clinic. The torn meniscus is repaired and supported with PRF, collagen scaffold and mFat to encourage tissue regeneration during healing. Performed by Professor Paul Lee at an ICRS Teaching Centre of Excellence. Where the meniscus cannot be salvaged, allograft replacement is the alternative.

How much does meniscus regeneration cost in the UK?

Meniscus regeneration cost at LCC is £9,800, inclusive of theatre, the consultant anaesthetist, the regenerative biology (PRF, collagen scaffold and mFat) and post-operative follow-up. Private meniscus regeneration cost figures are not consistently published across the UK because many clinics treat the biology as a paid extra on top of a baseline meniscus repair fee. At LCC, meniscus regeneration is delivered by Professor Paul Lee at an ICRS Teaching Centre of Excellence with the biology included as standard.

Meniscus regeneration cost in the UK explained

Meniscus regeneration at LCC combines arthroscopic meniscus repair with biological augmentation that supports tissue regeneration during healing: PRF (platelet-rich fibrin), collagen scaffold and mFat (micro-fragmented adipose tissue) are placed at the repair site at the time of surgery. A typical case takes ninety to one hundred and twenty minutes of theatre time. The biology, surgical disposables and instrumentation are all part of the cost.

At LCC the procedure is performed by Professor Paul Lee. The £9,800 figure covers the surgeon’s time on the day, the consultant anaesthetist, theatre time, the regenerative biology, and two post-operative reviews plus a six-month outcome review. We do not charge for the biology as an extra.

Why meniscus regeneration at LCC

  • A regenerate-first philosophy

Many clinics still default to partial meniscectomy. We repair and biologically augment wherever the tear pattern allows because long-term protection of the underlying cartilage matters more than the operative time saved by trimming.
  • ICRS Teaching Centre of Excellence

LCC is recognised by the International Cartilage Regeneration and Joint Preservation Society as a Teaching Centre of Excellence. Meniscus and cartilage preservation are principal interests of the clinic.
  • Biology included as standard

PRF, collagen scaffold and mFat are added to every meniscus regeneration case as standard. Many UK clinics charge for these as separate items; we include them in the £9,800 figure.
  • The surgeon you see is the surgeon who operates

Pre-operative consultation, surgery and post-operative reviews are with Professor Lee. There is no transfer to a registrar or to another consultant.

Your meniscus regeneration journey

  1. 1

    Discovery call (free, 15 minutes)

A clinical coordinator confirms whether meniscus regeneration looks like the right treatment to investigate, books the consultation if so, and answers cost questions.
  2. 2

Consultation with Professor Lee (£350, 60 minutes)

Imaging review, examination, and a treatment plan in writing. We confirm whether the meniscus is salvageable for biologically-augmented repair, or whether replacement is the right operation.
  3. 3

    Pre-operative preparation

Bloods, anaesthetic review, consent process. Typically two to three weeks before surgery.
  4. 4

    Day of surgery

Day-case admission at our partner hospital on Weymouth Street, central London. Surgery takes ninety to one hundred and twenty minutes. Most patients are home the same day.
  5. 5

    First two weeks

Brace, crutches and protected weight-bearing while the repair heals. Direct line to the surgical team for any concerns.
  6. 6

    Weeks 2 to 12

Physiotherapy with your chosen physiotherapist, progressive return to function. Two follow-up consultations included.
  7. 7

    Six-month review

Outcome assessment, return-to-sport guidance where applicable, and discharge planning.

If you are insured, we can provide an itemised invoice for you to submit for reimbursement, but you settle the bill with us directly.

International patients

We coordinate consultation, imaging, surgery and follow-up into a focused visit for international patients. Travel and accommodation are arranged separately.

Outcomes after meniscus regeneration

Meniscus regeneration is a repair-with-biology approach that aims to preserve the meniscus and protect the underlying cartilage. Most patients are walking unaided by week six and return to recreational activity by three to six months, with cutting and pivoting sport confirmed at the six-month review. Outcomes for biologically-augmented repair are better than for repair without augmentation.

Where the meniscus cannot be salvaged, allograft meniscus replacement (£28,000) is the alternative. We will tell you, at consultation, which conversation is the right one for your knee.

Patient stories

I researched meniscus regeneration before my consultation. Professor Lee not only confirmed it was the right approach but also explained the biology in a way that made sense. I am back to running again.

Frequently asked questions

How much does meniscus regeneration cost in the UK?

Meniscus regeneration at LCC is £9,800 all-inclusive. The figure covers theatre, consultant anaesthetist, biological augmentation (PRF, collagen scaffold, mFat), the surgeon’s time, two follow-up appointments and the six-month review.

How is meniscus regeneration different from meniscus repair?

They are the same procedure family. Meniscus regeneration is the framing that emphasises the biological augmentation (PRF, collagen, mFat) added to the repair to support tissue regeneration during healing. The price is the same.

What is the biology included in the price?

Every meniscus regeneration case at LCC includes PRF (platelet-rich fibrin), a collagen scaffold, and mFat (micro-fragmented adipose tissue) added at the time of surgery to support healing. Many clinics charge separately for these; we include them as standard.

When is meniscus replacement the answer instead of regeneration?

Where the tear pattern, tissue quality or timing makes regeneration impossible, allograft meniscus replacement (£28,000) is the alternative. Partial meniscectomy is a last resort. We will tell you, at consultation, which is appropriate.

Can I claim meniscus regeneration on private medical insurance?

LCC is a private-pay practice and does not contract with UK PMI panels. We can provide an itemised invoice if you wish to claim independently.

Does the price include the anaesthetist?

Yes. The £9,800 figure includes the consultant anaesthetist’s fee, theatre time, and the biological augmentation.

How long is recovery, and is physiotherapy included?

Most patients are walking unaided by week six and return to recreational activity by three to six months. Physiotherapy is not included; we share the post-operative programme with your physiotherapist in the first week.

Why is meniscus regeneration at LCC priced where it is?

The £9,800 figure reflects theatre time, the consultant anaesthetist, the included regenerative biology, the surgeon’s time, and a six-month follow-up programme. The biology is the centre of gravity of the procedure, not an extra.

Is the surgeon I see at consultation the same one who will operate?

Yes. Professor Paul Lee is your consulting surgeon, your operating surgeon, and your reviewing surgeon throughout follow-up.

Where will the surgery happen?

The consultation is at 66 Harley Street. The surgery itself is performed at our partner private hospital on Weymouth Street, central London.
